Albert Gustav Aristides Edelfelt — Finnish Painter
Albert Gustav Aristides Edelfelt (1854-1905) was an important nineteenth century Finnish-Swedish artist. His approximately 1400 paintings and drawings of women, landscapes, historical subject matter and portraits of high society are considered classics today. Since much has already been written about Edelfelt’s career, additional in-depth information is readily available in numerous publications about his life and artwork. He was born in the Finnish town of Kiiala. He lived in Paris for a considerable length of time and was considered to be a man of the world, from a nineteenth century perspective. Edelfelt believed that Paris was a good place for him to learn and develop his skills as a painter. Art abounded there and a host of other artists joined him in frequent lengthy discussions of art. He returned to Finland in 1875. The artist and his family often spent summers on the south coast of Finland in Haikko where he died in 1905. Examples of Edelfelt’s artwork may be viewed in major museums worldwide. Edelfelt — Virtual Gallery One Virtual Gallery Two |
